　之通小出対馬所へも被仰遣可被下候爰元へ付置候
　者之方ゟ人数申候得共それは遅く可春御座候間乍兼
　外其地ゟ内膳正仕合被仰遣可被下候早々以上
島原征伐始末別記曰正月三日肥州島原へ為上
　使井上筑後守被差遣候　御前江被　召出様
　子は直に被　仰會御着料之御腰物表江呉服御
　道服黄金十枚人馬御朱印被下之申刻退出

残念でなりません。そもそも内膳・十蔵が先駆けをするはずではございませんでしたが、思いのほか人数が掛かりませんでしたので、両人はやむを得ず先へ進まれたのです。内膳は残らず供をいたしました。手負い・討死の人数は多くございます。そちらからお越しの者も、皆残るところなく働きました。手負い・討死の者の詳細については、藤右衛門の方から申し上げます。取り紛れまして、取り急ぎ申し上げます。恐惶謹言。

なお、私は内膳が討死した場所を違えて存じておらず、討死の様子を見届けることができませんでした。無念で口惜しい次第でございます。しかしながら、内膳・十蔵ともに残すところなく働いた次第でございますので、本望と存じます。御奉公の本望、親に勝まさることは少しも悔みがございません。右の通り、小出対馬のところへもお伝えくださいますようお願い申し上げます。ここに付き置いた者の方から人数を申し上げるべきですが、それでは遅くなりましょうから、前もって、そちらの地から内膳正の次第をお伝えくださいますようお願い申し上げます。早々以上。

島原征伐始末別記に曰く、正月三日、肥州島原へ上使として井上筑後守が差し遣わされました。御前へ召し出された様子は、直接お言葉をいただき、御着料の御腰物（表に呉服の御道服）・黄金十枚・人馬の御朱印を下され、申の刻に退出し、即ちご出発となりました。

It is deeply regrettable. Naizen and Jūzō were not originally supposed to lead the charge, but since unexpectedly few troops advanced, both men had no choice but to go forward themselves. Naizen's entire retinue accompanied him. There were many wounded and killed. Those who came from your side also fought without any exceptions. The details regarding the wounded and killed will be reported by Tōuemon. Being caught up in the confusion, I write in haste. Respectfully submitted.

Furthermore, I did not know the exact location where Naizen was killed, and I was unable to witness the circumstances of his death. It is utterly regrettable and mortifying. However, since both Naizen and Jūzō fought without holding anything back, I believe it is what they had hoped for. Dying in loyal service to one's lord, surpassing even one's parents in devotion — there is not the slightest regret in this. Please convey the above to Koide Tsushima's quarters as well. The men stationed here could report the numbers, but that would take too long, so please send word ahead from your location regarding the circumstances of Naizen-no-shō's death. In haste, that is all.

According to the supplementary record of the Shimabara Subjugation: On the 3rd day of the 1st month, Inoue Chikugo-no-kami was dispatched as an official envoy (jōshi) to Hishū Shimabara. The circumstances of his audience before the lord were as follows: he received direct words, was granted a ceremonial sword (with a silk outer robe on the mounting), ten pieces of gold, and an official vermilion-seal document (shuinjō) for men and horses. He withdrew at the hour of the Monkey (around 4 p.m.) and immediately departed.
