According to the Amakusa Gunki (Military Chronicle of Amakusa): On the 3rd day of the 1st month, Inoue Chikugo-no-kami departed from Edo accompanied by his son Seibei. 4th Day, Tsuchinoe-Tatsu (Bōshin) According to Matsudaira Kai-no-kami Tertsuna's Amakusa Diary: On the 4th day of the 1st month, at the hour of the Sheep (around 2 p.m.), they arrived by ship at Arima and encamped between Higisu and Arima. Orders were issued to all units, and six articles were explained in person to the commanders and their retainers, recorded separately in a supplementary document. According to Matsudaira Izu-no-kami's Shimabara Memoranda: On the 4th day of the 1st month, the entire force, led by Kai-no-kami, arrived by ship at Arima. As night fell, the two camps were set up, and orders were given that night to place wicker trunks (tsuzura) on both flanks — as though mounted astride them. On this day, the evening meal could not be properly prepared; they chewed dry rice and drank hot water. According to the Nobunaga-ki (Nobutsuna's Record): On the 4th day of the 1st month, they arrived at Arima. That same day, Izu-no-kami assembled all the commanders and spoke: "At the time of the Battle of Sekigahara, Nobutsuna was still a child and could not participate in those affairs. At the time of the Osaka Campaign, I served the heir apparent and remained in Edo (Kōfu). Since then, I have grown accustomed to peaceful governance and have become unfamiliar with the arts of warfare and loyal battle. Therefore, I have not yet fully mastered the essentials of military command — this is something all of you know well. Nevertheless, an unexpected crisis has arisen, and I have been humbly entrusted with the military command. Though Nobutsuna is not capable, since assuming this post I have already harbored the spirit of a veteran minister and seasoned general. The reason is this: advancing alone into a distant frontier, I am frequently unable to keep watch over the safety of the various armies, all of which depend upon a single person. This is truly the moment to exert all one's strength and fulfill one's duty of loyalty. Therefore, I open my personal heart and mind, and freely direct the movements of these many great encampments. All commanders should likewise comply and follow, committing no transgressions. As for what I wish to say..."
