(Continuation of Nobutsuna's speech) "If anyone defies my orders and goes against the will of those above, even should they receive severe punishment, I shall have no heart of resentment or regret. Moreover, from the generals down to their retainers, if anyone has a stratagem or unconventional plan, they should freely present it — how could I cling to my own partial views and refuse to hear them? Nevertheless, once orders and agreements have been issued, if the various encampments fail to comply, I likewise cannot be without a heart of indignation and frustration. Yet, in dealing with the troops of the various generals, why must I press my own small contingent of soldiers? If we can preserve our lives and return to Edo, we must surely bring these matters to the ears of the Shogun. In that case, even if there were gracious pardon from above, Nobutsuna could not let the matter rest, and when each of us returns to the capital (Edo), we should meet face to face and freely express our true feelings. This too is the reason one should not forget one's lord, and should value future commands." The generals were all greatly moved and impressed. Orders were thereupon issued: palisades were erected, ditches were dug, the encampments were arrayed in formation, the ranks and files were brought into good order, and the organizational structure of the military camps was complete. With this, merchants from the surrounding area gathered to form a market, and trade proceeded without obstruction. Furthermore, one inspector (metsuke) was dispatched to each encampment to oversee the implementation of orders. Moreover, the matters ordered to the various armies were transmitted via post stations in the form of memorials to the Shogun; or, conversely, before the Shogun's rescript reached the army, the strategic dispositions had already been deployed among the troops. The memorials sent up and the rescripts received largely agreed with one another along the way — like two halves of a tally fitting perfectly together.
According to the memoir of Tachibana Sakon-shōgen Tadashige: On the 4th day of the 1st month, Lord Izu-no-kami and Lord Samon (Matsudaira Kai-no-kami) arrived at Arima. Lord Hosokawa Higo-no-kami also arrived at Arima on the same day. My (Tachibana Tadashige's) approach trenches (shiyori) extended about half as far as Matsukura's approach trenches, and I pushed my works forward beyond where Matsukura had previously advanced his trenches. However, after the arrival of the two lords, the allocation of positions in the rear was reassigned. My trenches were transferred to Lord Hosokawa, and in their place I was assigned the stretch between Genba's (Nabeshima Genba's) trenches and Matsukura's trenches. Matsukura's trenches were also present, but after the 1st day, the enemy (...)
