鹿児島県の管轄とした。五年九月、尚泰の賀慶正使である伊江王子、副使である宜野湾親方、賛議官である喜屋武親雲上以下、およそ四十人が東京に到着した。十四日、午後一時、三使が参朝し、外務卿、式部助がこれを引いて、太政大臣、諸省卿等が列立し、皇上に拝謁した。尚泰の上表に曰く、
恭しく思うに、皇上が即位されて以来、天の綱が張られ始め、すべての政治が一新され、民衆は皇恩に浴し、歓欣鼓舞しない者はありません。尚泰は南の果てにあって、伏して盛事を聞き、喜びの至りに堪えません。今、正使尚健、副使向有恒、賛議官向維新を遣わし、謹んで朝賀の礼を修め、かつ方物を貢献いたします。伏してお聞き届けくださいますようお願いいたします。
明治五年壬申七月十九日 琉球尚泰謹んで奏上
貢物は、唐筆、墨、硯、画、上布、綸子、縮緬、純子、青貝箱、焼酎等である。別に皇后へ上表し献物があり、使臣等も、また自ら皇上へ献物があり、共に嘉納の勅語を賜った。次に外務卿が、冊封の詔を宣読した。詔書に曰く、（首に大日本国璽の印があり、尾に天皇御璽の印がある）
朕は、上天の景命を受け、万世一系の帝位を継ぎ、広く四海を有し、八方の果てまでを治める。今琉球は近く南方にあり、気質は相同じく、言文に異なることなく、代々薩摩の附庸であった。そして爾尚泰はよく勤誠を致している。宜しく顕爵を与えるべきである。昇進させて琉球藩王とし、叙して華族に列する。咨れ尚泰よ、その藩屛の任を重んじ、衆庶の上に立ち、切に朕の意を体して、永く皇室を輔佐せよ。慎むべきかな。
英語訳
[The Ryukyu islands were placed] under the jurisdiction of Kagoshima Prefecture. In the 9th month of the 5th year [of Meiji], Shō Tai's congratulatory chief envoy Prince Ie, vice-envoy Ginowan oyakata, and councilor Kiyamu peichin, along with approximately forty others, arrived in Tokyo. On the 14th day, at 1 o'clock in the afternoon, the three envoys participated in court ceremony. The Foreign Minister and Assistant Ceremonial Official led them, with the Grand Minister of State and various ministry officials standing in formation, to have audience with His Majesty. Shō Tai's memorial stated:
I humbly reflect that since Your Majesty's accession to the throne, Heaven's order has begun to be established, all governmental affairs have been renewed, and there are none among the people who do not bathe in imperial grace and rejoice with dancing hearts. I, Shō Tai, being in the southern extremity, prostrate myself upon hearing of these glorious events, and cannot contain my utmost joy. Now I dispatch chief envoy Shō Ken, vice-envoy Shō Yūkō, and councilor Shō Ishin to respectfully perform the ceremony of court congratulations and moreover to tribute local products. I prostrate myself and request that this be heard.
Meiji 5, year of the Water Monkey, 7th month, 19th day Ryukyu's Shō Tai respectfully memorializes
The tribute items were Chinese brushes, ink, inkstones, paintings, fine cloth, twilled silk, silk crepe, plain silk, mother-of-pearl boxes, distilled spirits, and others. Separately, there was a memorial and offerings to the Empress, and the envoys also personally presented offerings to His Majesty, all receiving gracious words of acceptance. Next, the Foreign Minister read aloud the investiture edict. The imperial edict stated: (At the beginning there is the seal of the Great Japan National Seal, and at the end there is the seal of the Imperial Seal)
I, having received Heaven's bright mandate, succeed to the imperial throne of an unbroken line for ten thousand generations, broadly possess the four seas, and rule over the eight directions to their furthest reaches. Now Ryukyu is nearby in the southern region, with similar temperament and nature, no difference in language and writing, and has been a dependency of Satsuma for generations. And you, Shō Tai, have well demonstrated diligent sincerity. It is fitting to bestow upon you high rank. You are promoted to be King of Ryukyu Domain and ranked among the nobility. I charge you, Shō Tai, to value the responsibility of domain protection, stand above the masses, earnestly embody my intentions, and forever assist the Imperial House. Be respectful!
