After the inquiry about His Excellency's mood was completed, following the inspectors' directions, the two high-ranking family members
took their seats, and the Nikko 17th day
imperial proxy appointment was completed. Both myself and Matsudaira Iga-no-kami together
took our seats from the middle of Fuyo-no-ma. With the senior councilors seated in rows, duty magistrate
Matsudaira Izu-no-kami announced: "On the coming 20th day, Nikko
imperial proxy, as written in the document, you are hereby appointed," and we were given one written document.
As it was handed over, I received it and immediately opened the document to examine it.
I also showed it to Iga-no-kami for his examination, then placed the document aside and stated "I humbly accept the appointment as Nikko imperial proxy on the 20th day, considering it a most grateful and honorable position," and
Iga-no-kami also offered his congratulatory remarks. Then, holding the document,
we all proceeded to Kari-no-ma and withdrew from the side. Yagyu Tajima-no-kami,
Matsudaira Hyuga-no-kami, and Takagi Monto-no-sho, three people took their seats, and were appointed as festival magistrates and substitutes for Nikko's 17th day festival.
One: Today, having been appointed as Nikko imperial proxy for the 20th day, regarding the matter of courtesy calls by senior and junior officials for myself and Iga-no-kami:
When Matsudaira Suho-no-kami served the year before last,
he did not visit those in mourning. Last year when Matsudaira Totomi-no-kami was appointed,
the courtesy calls followed precedent. On that occasion, he did not serve
Echizen-no-kami due to his mourning period. However, when the official letter
arrived regarding permission to depart for Nikko, unlike previous precedent, it lacked the character "kiyome" (purification), and moreover, Echizen-no-kami's
name was included. So on the 17th day, I consulted with festival magistrates Makino Naizen-no-sho and
Abe Settsu-no-kami. They replied that for both of them, following precedent,
the official letter's content was unchanged, but currently Echizen-dono's
name was absent, perhaps due to his mourning period. Based on this, I sent
a representative to duty magistrate Matsudaira
Izumi-no-kami through the public affairs official to negotiate the aforementioned matter. The response was that "service should be performed regardless of those in mourning."
Therefore, this time following this guidance, although junior councilor Ii Hyobu-dono was
in mourning, I made the rounds, and discussed with Iga-no-kami to serve similarly.
This was quite appropriate, and I made sure to inform Grand Inspector Kuwahara Yoshu.
One: The document handed over by Izumi-no-kami with the senior councilors seated in rows, one copy
as follows:
Nikko 20th day Tsuchiya Tajima-no-kami
