1. This morning before six o'clock I left home and visited Izu-no-kami, who was on duty, for courtesy calls. I completed expressing gratitude for receiving permission to travel to Nikkō in the audience chamber, then proceeded to the inner quarters to inquire about his health and expressed my gratitude again. 1. I also visited three other places - Mizuno Dewa-no-kami and other senior councilors who were off duty - before going to the castle, meeting with their chamberlains to express my gratitude. 1. The head priest of Nikkō departed for Nikkō yesterday. Since I declined the audience the day before yesterday to announce my appointment as representative, I visited the main temple and brought a written statement to leave with the intermediary. I trust that the head priest is in ever better health, and humbly consider this a most auspicious occasion. On this occasion, I have been appointed as representative for the twentieth day at Nikkō, which I consider a most grateful appointment. Regarding the audience in this connection, I am most honored that you graciously agreed to meet me the day before yesterday. As I was ill at that time and could not attend, I am visiting now to express my gratitude for that matter as well. I humbly request that you convey this message to the chief administrator. April 13th [Name with seal] 14th day 1. Nothing of note occurred. 15th day 1. I left home at five o'clock and three units past (around 5:30) and went to the castle to receive an official document. (Attire: silk-lined garment over hemp formal dress) 1. When I reported through a temple servant to the inspector that I had come to receive the official document, the inspector on duty, Kojima Magoemon, sent word that he acknowledged this. 1. There was no monthly courtesy ceremony, but many were taking leave, and there were irregular courtesy calls. All the colleagues of the same rank were circulating until the main gate opened, but I alone remained waiting in my seat. Shortly after the courtesy calls ended, Inspector Kojima Magoemon instructed me to approach, so I waited by the sliding doors facing the mandarin duck cedar doors at the entrance to the Yamabuki chamber. Only Izu-no-kami, who was on duty, appeared in the paneled chamber, and following the inspector's instructions, I came forward to receive the official document for the Nikkō magistrate, and the message to the magistrate's chief administrator was according to precedent (continues...)
