山野 初（はじ）め参学（さんがく）の日 誓（ちか）つて勇猛（ゆみやう）の信心（しん〳〵）を
憤発（ふんはつ）し不 退（たい）の道情（どうじやう）を激起（げきき）し精錬（せいれん）刻苦（こくく）
する者 既（すで）に両三霜 乍（たちま）ち一夜 忽然（こつぜん）として
落節（らくせつ）す従前多少の疑惑（ぎわく）根（ね）に和（くは）して氷（ひやう）
融（ゆう）し曠劫（くわうごう）生死（せうじ）の業（わざ）根底（こんそこ）に徹（てつ）して漚滅（おうめつ）す
自ら謂（おもへ）らく道ち人を去（さ）る事 寔（まこと）に遠（とふ）からず
古人二三十年是何の捏怪（ねつくはい）ぞと怡悦（いゑつ）蹈舞（とうぶ）を

夜船閑話

私は初めて参学した日に、勇猛な信心を奮い起こすことを誓い、退かない道心を激しく起こして、精進刻苦すること既に二、三年。突然ある夜、忽然として悟りを得た。従来の多くの疑惑が根本から氷解し、永劫の生死の業が根底まで徹して泡のように消滅した。

自分では思った。道が人から離れていることは、まことに遠いことではない。古人が二、三十年も修行したというのは一体何の奇怪なことかと、喜び踊った。

When I first began my religious studies, I vowed to arouse fierce and brave faith, stirred up an unwavering religious spirit, and engaged in intense and austere practice for already two or three years. Suddenly one night, I achieved sudden enlightenment. All my previous doubts melted away like ice at their very root, and the karmic bonds of countless eons of birth and death were penetrated to their foundation and vanished like bubbles.

I thought to myself: the Way is truly not far from people. What strange thing was it that the ancients spoke of twenty or thirty years of practice? And I rejoiced and danced with joy.
