Since donning the Buddhist robes and carrying the alms bowl, the cloth-robed monks who wander as unsui (cloud and water) seeking Zen enlightenment barely cross the threshold before they gladly accept the master's harsh scolding as sweet nectar and relish his painful strikes, forgetting to leave. Some stay ten years, others twenty years, and there are those who don't mind becoming dust at the foot of Kōrin at all. All of them are without exception the outstanding talents of the monasteries, the elite from all directions. Those who see this knit their brows, those who hear it break out in sweat. Even demons and spirits would shed tears, even devils and heretics would join their palms in respect. When they first arrived, even those who possessed the handsome features of Song Yu or He'an, with skin so lustrous it was like congealed oil, before long came to resemble Du Fu or Jia Dao - their appearance withered and gaunt, their complexion haggard and worn. Or they are like Qu Zi encountered by the riverside. In their Zen seeking, these are people who give no thought to their bodily life.
