苦瓠 《割書：和名にがひさご》
壺盧（ユウガホ）、和名なりひさごの類にて、味苦く、毒ありて、喫（クラフ）べから
ざるものをいふ、故に苦壺盧（クコロ）ともいへり、俗に瓢覃（ヒヤウタン）と呼（ヨブ）もの
是（コレ）なり、この子穣（ミ）を日に乾（ホシ）たるを細末して、
四五分より一戔 許（バカリ）を用れば、よく吐を催（モヨフ）す、
瓜蒂（クワテイ）なきときは、代用すべし、此物を丸薬にして
用れば、水を寫（クダ）す効（コウ）あり、故に本草にも、大水、
面目 浮腫（ウキハレ）、及 黄疸（ワウダン）、腫満（シユマン）等（ナド）に用て、よく水を瀉（クダス）
ことをいへり、また蚘虫（クワイチウ）を逐（オフ）効をも
いへは試（コヽロム）べし、壺盧（コロ）、苦瓠（ククワ）もと一物なる
が故に、壺盧を多く苑（ソノク）中に植（ウヱ）
たる近旁（アタリ）に、苦瓠わづかに
一 茎（ポン）ありとも、壺盧 尽（コト〳〵）く変（ヘン）
じて苦瓠となること、予も
嘗（カツ）てこれを自験（コヽロン）たりし
ことあり、無毒淡味にして、

苦瓠（和名：にがひさご）
壺盧（ユウガオ）、和名なりひさごの類で、味が苦く、毒があって、食べてはいけないものをいう。そのため苦壺盧とも呼ばれている。俗にひょうたんと呼ぶものがこれである。この果実を日に干したものを細かい粉末にして、四、五分から一銭ほどを用いれば、よく嘔吐を催す。瓜蒂がないときは、代用すべきである。この植物を丸薬にして用いれば、水を排出する効果がある。そのため本草書にも、大水（浮腫）、顔面浮腫、黄疸、腫満などに用いて、よく水を排出することが記されている。また回虫を駆除する効果もあるというので試してみるべきである。壺盧と苦瓠はもともと同一の植物であるため、壺盧を多く庭に植えた近くに、苦瓠がわずか一本でもあると、壺盧がすべて変化して苦瓠になってしまう。私もかつてこれを実際に試してみたことがある。無毒で淡味で食べることができる壺盧が、

苦味があり毒性を持ち、果実は嘔吐下痢を起こす激しい性質の物に変化する。人が悪に感化されやすいのは、独り薛居州が宋王をどうしようもないと、孟子が嘆いたのは、実にもっともなことであろう。

Bitter Gourd (Japanese name: nigahisago)
This is a type of bottle gourd (yugao), Japanese name narihisago, with bitter taste and toxicity that makes it inedible. Therefore it is also called bitter bottle gourd. What is commonly called hyotan (bottle gourd) is this plant. When the fruit is dried in the sun and ground to fine powder, using about 4-5 bu to 1 sen will effectively induce vomiting. When melon pedicle (guati) is unavailable, this should be used as substitute. When this plant is made into pills for use, it has the effect of purging water. Therefore, medical texts also record its use for edema, facial swelling, jaundice, and abdominal distension, effectively draining water. It is also said to expel roundworms, so this should be tried. Since bottle gourd and bitter gourd are originally the same plant, when bitter gourds are planted near where many bottle gourds grow in a garden, even just one stem of bitter gourd will cause all the bottle gourds to transform into bitter gourds.
