まして人に対して真実の仁愛の情がない時には、一大事の用に立つものではない。全ての事において、上は下に助けられ、下は上に恵まれて、世の中の事は成り立つものであることを、よく自分を顧みて深く考えるべきことではないだろうか。《割書：我が国の古い軍法のようなものも、今の世からこれを見る時には、皆これは昔の人の糟粕（絞りかす）なので、採用し難いこともまた多いであろう。しかし能くその意を得て、これを学ぶ時は、役に立たないとは言えない。また或る人が言うには、西洋人の戦法には、回りくどくて紙上の空論に近いものが甚だ多い。今その一説を挙げて言う、我が陣営より撃って出て、敵を誘い出して戦おうとするには、その地形をよく見て、諸兵の性質に適し、ここにて十分の働きをなすべきと思う地を選ぶべしと。これは必勝を期する策であるべきだが、どうして敵地に上陸して、諸兵の性質に適すべき地に頼ることを得ようか。笑うべきの甚だしいものではないか。私が思うに、彼らもし軍艦を出して陸に上り、勝手に大砲を用いることができなくなれば、たとえば河童が陸へ上ったようなもので、必ず我らの捕虜となるものであろう。》

在陣中 隊長・士卒等の心得の事
隊長はもちろん言うまでもないが、たとえ歩兵であっても、暑い時期に日陰のない所に久しく休んではならない。特に仮眠などすることは厳しく戒めるべきである。身体が熱くなっても、急に衣服を脱いで涼しさを求めてはいけない。《割書：これは養生のためにならないだけでなく、在陣中は、士卒の怠慢をよく戒めて、厳密でなければ、不慮の敗北を取るものなので、この事を怠慢にしてはならない。》清らかであっても、沸騰した水などを試さずして、むやみに飲んではならない。勝手に西瓜・甜瓜などを貪り食ってはならない。名も知らない茸を採って食べてはいけない。毒に当たって急死したのを見聞きするところである。《割書：茸毒を解くことは、後の条に載せてある》大酒は元より厳禁すべきである。陣中はいつ何時事があるかも、あらかじめ計り難いことで

For people with deep compassion, even horses become well-tamed and completely manageable. Guidelines for Unit Leaders and Soldiers While in Camp
Not only unit leaders, but even common foot soldiers must not rest long in places without shade during hot weather. Especially taking naps should be strictly forbidden.
