The Scene at Oiso
We, many great and small lords,
cease taking the waters
and lodge
at Oiso
Just then,
due to a storm and mere chance, dikes were built
upstream and downstream of the Banyu River,
and when the upstream water was cut off and released,
the Sakawa River became flooded,
making it impossible to cross, so everyone
stayed at Oiso for fourteen or fifteen days,
losing themselves in pleasure and enjoyment.
At Oiso, thinking
"This is surely
a place to make
money,"
the courtesans day and night
raised their rates
from three bu per hour
to three bu, and geisha
for one meriyasu garment
charge about three times the usual rate,
and Kakari Heiji's
soba, though from a cheap place,
with senbiki coins and naka-no-tsuki,
eight pieces are exchanged
for one gold koban,
sweet plums cost
one ryo each,
mountain tofu
costs one ryo per piece,
and such outrageous
things indeed.
Thus with Oiso's
great extravagance,
with a hundred people's backing
three hundred ryo of
profit is made.
Even when the river opens,
they cannot leave,
becoming like snipe birds,
at their wit's end,
a hundred people,
a hundred people
conspiring together
to create
infinite money.

unusual entertainment available.
While some people light fires
during rain spells, to spend
days until dawn
is indeed grateful.
