　凡そ官員の外衣は身丈より長く、大帯でこれを腰間に束ね、三四寸持ち上げて寛博にし、以って諸物を懐に納めるに便とする。紙挟み、煙袋などは皆自ら胸次に貯え、時に応じて取り用いる。大僚も幼童も皆これと同様である。賤役執事は則ちその袖を脊上に反結する。幼童の衣袖は脅下を穿ち露わし三四寸許りとする。年長になると頂中髪を剃り、即ち僧衣に縫い属す。両脅下は皆穿つ。その他は皆連衽にして隙漏する処無し。首里人の衣は年少者は皆大紅を裏に用い、外は五色紬錦で、また反覆両面に着る。官員は紬緞で衣を作り、諸色は禁ぜられない。衣一つを製するごとに大緞三丈五六尺を須い、その費用は中国の殆ど倍であると云う。
　女人の外衣は男と別なく、襟は皆帯無く、これを衾と名づけ、身上左に披く。

　Generally, officials' outer garments are longer than their body height, bound at the waist with a large belt, lifted up three to four inches to make them loose and ample, convenient for storing various items in the breast. Paper folders and tobacco pouches are all stored in the chest area for use when needed. Both high officials and young attendants all do likewise. Menial servants, however, tie their sleeves back behind their backs. Young attendants have their sleeve sides opened, exposing about three to four inches. When they reach adulthood and shave the hair on top of their heads, they are immediately sewn into monk's robes. Both sides under the arms are opened. All others have continuous front panels with no gaps or openings. The clothing of Shuri people, when young, all use bright red as lining, with outer garments of five-colored silk brocade, also worn reversibly on both sides. Officials make their clothes from silk damask, with no restrictions on colors. To make one garment requires three zhang five to six chi of large damask, the cost being nearly double that of China, it is said.
　Women's outer garments are no different from men's, the collars all have no belts, called "coverlets," draped over the body on the left side.
