Memorial Requesting Official Students' Admission to Study The Hanlin Academy Compiler Minister Hai Bao and Editor Minister Xu Baoguang, who have returned from the Ryukyu Kingdom, respectfully memorialize regarding a petition matter. We ministers, having received imperial orders to complete the investiture ceremonies for Ryukyu, during the banquet had the king speak through an interpreter saying: "Our country is located in a remote place overseas, with crude customs having taken root. In the 25th year of Kangxi, we received imperial permission for three official students—Ruan Weixin, Cai Wenpu, and others—to enter school for study. Now we have finally come to know something of literary education, which is entirely Your Majesty's beneficence. For these thirty years since then, we have had no opportunity to petition above. Now, fortunately, Heaven has sent envoys to our country, so we seek to follow the precedent of former envoy Wang Ji's petition for academic study, to clearly demonstrate the intent of distant peoples seeking civilization. If we might receive your gracious permission and, following former precedent, again send official students to enter school for study, then Your Majesty's literary education would spread even wider." The Ministry of Rites respectfully submits this memorial for imperial attention. The memorial from Chief Envoy Hanlin Academy Compiler Hai Bao and Vice Envoy Hanlin Academy Editor Xu Baoguang, copied out by the Office of Scrutiny for Rites upon their return from the Ryukyu investiture, arrived at the ministry on the 15th day of the 7th month of the 59th year of Kangxi. Our deliberation concludes that the Ryukyu Kingdom investiture envoys Hanlin Academy Compiler Hai Bao and Editor Xu Baoguang...
