The memorial states: "We ministers completed the investiture ceremonies for the Ryukyu King, and during the banquet the king had an interpreter convey his words saying: 'Our country is located in a remote place overseas, with crude customs having taken root. In the 25th year of Kangxi, we received imperial orders to send three official students including Ruan Weixin for academic study, and now we have finally come to know something of literary education. For these thirty years since, we have had no opportunity to petition above. Fortunately, Heaven has sent envoys to our country, so we seek to follow the precedent of former envoy Wang Ji's petition for academic study, to clearly demonstrate the intent of distant peoples seeking civilization. If we could again send official students for academic study, then Your Majesty's literary education would spread even wider,' and other such reasons," which was formally memorialized and arrived at the ministry. Upon investigation, in the 23rd year of Kangxi, the envoy sent for the investiture of the Ryukyu King, Hanlin Academy Compiler Wang Ji and others, conveyed the request of that country's King Shang Zhen to have his retainer ministers' sons travel to the capital to study at the Imperial Academy, and this was forwarded to the ministry. Our ministry deliberated according to his request and submitted a formal proposal, receiving the imperial edict "Follow the proposal," which we respectfully obeyed, as recorded in our files. Now, Ryukyu King Shang Jing demonstrates sincere inclination toward civilization, having already requested again to send official students for academic study, saying "Your Majesty's literary education would spread even wider" and other such words. We should respond as requested and permit these official students to travel to the capital to study at the Imperial Academy. The specific procedures to be followed can be deliberated and formally proposed when the time comes. This was submitted on the 3rd day of the 8th month of the 59th year of Kangxi, and on the 5th day of the same month received the imperial edict "Follow the proposal."
