せたい山いつけ寺といふ寺
あり此ぢうじを売買おせうと
申けるがとくしつけんこの
ひしりにていはゆる銭ちしき
と申はこれなるへしつねに
ひゆほうべんをもつて人を
みちびきけりさてひゆ
ほうへんと申はちりくたとへを
とりてぐちむちのよまぬどし
かゝぬどしをまことの
みちに引入る事に
してすてに仏も

此売買和尚

おのれ〳〵かいゑにかいてう仏の
あるゆゑんをときましやうと
まづあふぎをしやにかまへ
しはぶきしてかうざの上の
さゆを一口のまれければ

現代語訳
昔々のそのまた昔、
世帯山一家寺という寺があり、この住職を売買和尚と申したが、得意先見込のこの秘術にて、いわゆる銭知識と申すのはこれであろう。常に譬喩方便をもって人を導いていた。さて譬喩方便と申すのは、身近なたとえを取って、口もきけず読み書きもできない愚かな者を真の道に引き入れることにして、すでに仏も法華経に譬喩品というのを別に出されている。
この売買和尚、ある日の談義に申されるには「そもそも諸仏菩薩が遠国他国より都に出でたまい、御開帳があって田舎の諸仏を拝することは、ありがたいご縁である。しかれども衆生は世に開帳仏があることを、我々の家の内に開帳仏があることを知らない。
そこで今日の説法には、お前たちの家に開帳仏のある由縁を説きましょう」と、まず扇子を講座に構え、咳払いして高座の上の茶を一口飲まれれば、参詣の諸人は耳をそばだてて聞いていた。

英語訳
Long, long ago, in times even more ancient,
there was a temple called Setaiyama Ikkaji Temple, and the head priest was called Baibai Osho (Commerce Priest). Through his specialty of this secret art, what is called "money wisdom" would be this. He always guided people using parables and skillful means. Now, parables and skillful means refer to taking familiar examples to lead those who cannot speak properly or read and write into the true path, and indeed the Buddha already set forth a separate "Parable Chapter" in the Lotus Sutra.
This Commerce Priest, in a sermon one day, said: "The fact that various buddhas and bodhisattvas come forth from distant lands to the capital, and there are special exhibitions where country folk can worship various buddhas, is a most blessed connection. However, sentient beings do not know that exhibition buddhas exist in the world, that exhibition buddhas exist within our own homes.
So in today's sermon, I shall explain the reason why there are exhibition buddhas in your homes." First positioning his fan at the lectern, clearing his throat and taking a sip of tea on the high platform, the gathered worshippers listened with pricked ears.
