【右頁=p44】 その後毎日お呼び出しがあり、あちらの土地の様子についてお尋ねがございました。揚屋に滞在している間は、毎月三度ずつ湯風呂と月代を仰せつけられ、また日々紙代として九文ずつを下され、明け六つから夕七つまで揚屋の中を歩行することをお許しいただきました。また滞在中四度、宮参りを仰せつけられました。 この度の難船の始末、巡った国々の風土の様子について見聞したことを詳しくお尋ねになり申し上げました。国の品物並びに産物の名前については、サフ(泗水府)で詳しく通訳に話して確認したところ、先ほど申し上げた通りであると通訳が申しておりました。里数についてはすべて日本の道程図をもって申し上げましたと申し上げたところ、異国においてキリシタンなど怪しい宗門などに勧誘されることはなかったかとのお糺しがございました。全くそのようなことはございませんでした。長崎のお役所でも 【左頁=p45】 厳しくお糺しがあって踏絵を仰せつけられ、すぐに皆仏像を踏みました。私の宗旨は浄土真宗で、羽咋郡一宮寺家村の長栄寺の檀那でございますと申し上げました。異国に漂流しながらも無事に帰国できましたことは、ひとえに御上の御恩沢によるものですから、厚く心に留めるようにと仰せ渡されました。まことにありがたく、冥加至極の幸せ、ご仁恵のほど恐れ入りますと申し上げました。異国漂流したからには今後は船稼ぎをお差し止め、また陸路であっても他国へ出ることは一切相成らないと仰せ渡され、詳細を畏まりました。だんだんとご面倒なことを申し上げるようなこともございませんで、ありがたい仕合わせと存じます。 一枚  木綿袷 一枚  同肌着

[Right Page = P44] After that, we were summoned daily and questioned about the conditions of those lands. While staying at the ageya (quarantine facility), we were ordered to take hot baths and have our topknots shaved three times each month, and were given nine mon daily as paper money. We were permitted to walk around within the ageya from dawn (6 o'clock) until evening (7 o'clock). Also, during our stay, we were ordered to visit shrines four times. Regarding the details of this shipwreck and the customs of the countries we visited, we were questioned in detail about what we had observed and gave our account. Concerning the goods and products of those countries, we had spoken in detail with interpreters at Siaf (Quanzhou) and confirmed the information, and the interpreters stated that it was as we had reported earlier. We explained that all distances were calculated using Japanese road maps. We were then questioned whether we had been encouraged to adopt Christianity or other suspicious religious sects while in foreign countries. There was absolutely nothing of that sort. At the Nagasaki government office as well, [Left Page = P45] there was strict questioning and we were ordered to perform the fumie (stepping on Christian images), which we all immediately did by stepping on Buddhist images. I stated that my religious sect was Jōdo Shinshū (Pure Land Buddhism) and that I was a parishioner of Chōeiji temple in Terakemura, Hakui District, IchinoMiya. We were told that although we had drifted to foreign countries, our safe return was entirely due to the benevolent grace of the authorities, and we should keep this deeply in mind. We responded that we were truly grateful and that this was an extremely fortunate blessing, and we were deeply grateful for such benevolence. Since we had drifted to foreign countries, we were informed that henceforth our ship work would be prohibited, and that we would not be allowed to travel to other provinces even by land routes. We humbly accepted these detailed instructions. There were no particularly troublesome matters to report, and we considered this a most fortunate situation.
