ゑりて廣く四方の人にも見せ歩（あゆみ）にくる
しまん老少の目をも歓（よろこば）しめんとす抑この
行粧の圖来朝のたびことに刊行すといへ
とも皆利を射るのみの業にして正しく
其さまを見ん便となるへきものなく
いま上（しよう）木（ほく）するはさる類（たくい）にあらす親（した）しく
聞まさしく見て寫（うつ）しいたす所にし
あれは眼（まの）前（あたり）みたらんにもをさ〳〵違ふこと
有へからす穴賢

現代語訳

彫って広く四方の人にも見せ、歩くのに苦労する
老人や子供の目をも楽しませようとするものである。そもそもこの
行装の図は来朝のたびごとに刊行されるというが、
皆利益を狙うだけの仕事であって、正しく
その様子を見る便となるべきものはなく、
今上梓するものはそのような類ではない。親しく
聞き、確かに見て写し記したところなので
あるから、目の前で見たとしてもさほど違うこと
はないであろう。穴賢よ。

英語訳

carved and shown widely to people from all directions, to delight the eyes of the elderly and children who have difficulty walking. Now, although illustrations of these procession costumes are said to be published each time they come to court, they are all merely ventures aimed at profit, and there are none that could serve as a proper means of viewing their actual appearance. What I now publish is not of that sort. Since these are things I have intimately heard about and accurately seen and copied, there should be little difference from what one would see with one's own eyes. How admirable!
