周囲一里余りもあるでしょうか。人家がまばらに見え、端船でその島へ漕ぎ寄せると、島の人々がたくさん集まってきました。男女とも裸で、木の葉で下帯のように覆っています。全体に肌の色は黒く、木で作った玩具の弓を持参して、買ってくれるような仕草をしましたが、言葉は通じませんでした。鉄輪や鉄鎖の壊れた物など、すべて鉄製の物を好み、それは包丁などに直すためだそうです。水夫たちがその弓を買い取り、代わりに鉄の壊れた物を渡しました。私も弓を求め、代わりに水夫から一同に渡されたものを与えました。後で帰国の上、船頭の子供へ贈る予定のものでした。ところどころに小島が見え、同様に裸島で、いずれも自立した所だと聞きました。二日ほど船を停泊させ、薪水を取り入れ、近海で捕鯨を行いました。

The circumference appeared to be about one ri. Houses were sparsely visible, and when they rowed to the island in a small boat, many islanders gathered together. Both men and women were naked, covering themselves with tree leaves like loincloths. Their skin color was generally dark, and they brought wooden toy bows, gesturing as if wanting to sell them, but no words could be understood. They favored all iron objects such as broken iron rings or iron chains, apparently to remake them into knives and such. The sailors bought these bows and gave broken iron objects in return. I also obtained a bow, giving in exchange something that had been distributed to everyone by the sailors. This was intended to be presented to the ship captain's children upon returning to Japan. Small islands were visible here and there, similarly barren islands, and we heard that all were self-governing places. They anchored the ship for about two days, took on firewood and water, and engaged in whaling in nearby waters.
