The fellow passengers also disembarked as they each saw fit. This place was a spacious area with many inns visible, and it was a prosperous location. I loaded my luggage onto a local cart pulled by a horse and traveled about two ri along mountain roads. There were one or two houses here and there, but for convenience I camped outdoors. I paid five silver coins for the cart and horse rental. For food, I brought bread made from wheat flour and boiled salted pork, enough for about five days. I used my iron kettle to boil water for use.
The next morning I again hired a cart and horse, loaded my luggage, and departed. After traveling about three ri across flat land, we reached an area with many hills and slopes. Having traveled a total of about ten ri and with evening approaching, I camped outdoors. For the following two days I continued in the same manner, and on the evening of the fifth day I arrived at a place called Auburn. This was located on the North Fork. There are said to be three locations: North Fork, Middle Fork, and South Fork, but I did not go to the Middle or South Forks.
At the foot of the mountains, the North Fork had about fifty houses, all with wooden shingle roofs. I stayed at an inn. There was a river at this location, about seven to eight ken wide with rapid currents, which was said to be upstream of the Sacramento River. Only men lived in this place. After resting for one day, I inquired about the conditions at the gold mines from people at the inn.
