乗組オアホへ罷越候様九助より承罷在候処右之者共
はアメリカ州之鯨漁船にて為乗組唐国ホンコンへ
此ホンコント申所之儀在留の唐人共へ相尋候処広東之
内香港と申所有之右地名之字音に似寄候処同所之
儀に可有之と存候旨申之候
送遣候由に付私共三人も同様右船に便船仕度段船頭へ
相頼候へ共乗組多人数に相成候由に付便船難相成 へ
出帆致候由に付万次郎は湊繋居候北アメリカ之商船に
被雇船仕廻等致居候処此船は唐国センハイと申所へ
此センハイと申所之儀在留之唐人共へ相尋候処聞覚不申
上海と申字音之訛りにも可有之と存候旨申之候
茶を積受請に参り候由に付万次郎ゟ伝蔵五右衛門へ相咄私
共此船に乗組日本へ帰国為致呉候様船頭フイツモウへ相頼

乗り組ませてオアフ島へ行かせたと九助より聞いていたところ、その者共はアメリカの鯨漁船で乗り組みとして唐国のホンコンへ
このホンコンと申す所のことを在留の唐人共へ尋ねたところ、広東の内の香港という所があり、その地名の字音に似寄っているところから、同所のことであろうと思うと申していました。
送られたということなので、私共三人も同様にその船に便船したい旨を船頭へ頼みましたが、乗組が多人数になるということで便船が叶わず出帆したということでした。そこで万次郎は港に繋がれていた北アメリカの商船に雇われて船の仕舞い等をしていたところ、この船は唐国のセンハイという所へ
このセンハイと申す所のことを在留の唐人共へ尋ねたところ、聞き覚えがないが、上海という字音の訛りでもあろうかと思うと申していました。

Regarding this place called Shanghai, when we inquired of the resident Chinese people, they said they had not heard of it, but thought it might be a corruption of the pronunciation of "Shanghai."
Since the ship was going to load and transport tea, Manjirō spoke to Denzō and Goemon, and we requested Captain Whitmore to let us join the crew to return to Japan. He replied that the route to China goes westward, and detouring to Japanese territory would mean going off course and taking extra time, and moreover there were commercial schedules to consider, making it difficult to make such a stop.
