一万次郎儀外国逗留中稼溜候銀銭を以所々
に而調物致候は全く不自由無之ために御座候得とも懐
砲 焔硝ビストン或は袂時計買取候次第御尋請懐
砲等買受所持致候儀は一躰アメリカ州に不限外国
之習ひに而殊にカリホルニヤ等へ参り候者は其身
之用心として買取所持致賊其外不時之災難
身命に及候節俱に命を絶し候身之用心に有之国風
之由人に寄三四張挺も所持の者有之玉薬鉛に玉も
同断添候物に付ハアへイフンに而買取候儀にて袂時計
之儀も日本へ帰国之念発し私日本土州出生之
所抔には所持致候は覚不申珍敷品に付持参り
為見度且又船中便利之品に有之ヌヘツトホヲル抔
にては子供迄も所持致候間私ヲアホへ乗合之内商ひ

同月二十九日に薩摩国山川へ到着し、翌月末日の朝に同地を出帆し、同日夕方に鹿児島へ到着して上陸し、しばらく逗留しました。二日程陸路を行き、京泊港より乗船して長崎へ送られることになり、当年九月末日に長崎港に到着いたしました。
一、万次郎について、外国滞在中に稼いで貯めた銀銭で各地において品物を購入したのは、全く不自由がないためでございますが、懐中鉄砲、火薬、ピストン、或いは懐中時計を買い取った次第についてお尋ねを受けました。懐中鉄砲等を買い受けて所持したことについては、一体アメリカに限らず外国の習慣であり、特にカリフォルニア等へ参る者は、その身の用心として買い取り所持します。盗賊その他不時の災難で身命に及ぶ際に、共に命を絶つ身の用心であり、国の風習により、人によっては三、四張も所持する者がおります。弾薬や鉛の弾も同様に付属する物なので、ハワイで買い取ったことです。懐中時計についても、日本への帰国の念を発し、私の日本土佐国出生の地などには所持している者はいないと覚えており、珍しい品なので持参して見せたく、且つ船中で便利な品であります。ニューベッドフォードなどでは子供まで所持しているので、私が捕鯨船に乗り合わせている間に、商船の者より買い取ったことでございます。
