之海岸ゟ一町程隔り拾五間に幅七八間程之堂之
様成家二ヶ所有之内は土間にて石を敷釣鐘も有之
腰懸夥敷並置四ッ時比は諸人へ為知候ため釣鐘を
つき候を承り男女老若共右之所へ相集り候上主人
と相見候者羅紗之筒袖之衣類にて一人罷出農工
商共営方無懈怠様并行儀作法等之儀を教導
致候由漂流人共も罷越候得共相分不申右教導
致候者はアメリカ并フランス国之ものゝ由兼而別
家に罷在候当日に右掛之場所へ出張候由右之外
年始を祝ひ候と申す儀も無之妻を迎候節抔は魚
肉獣肉等之料理にて客を呼賑敷儀も有之候由承り

海岸から一町程離れたところに、十五間に幅七、八間程の堂のような家が二か所あります。内部は土間で石を敷いてあり、釣鐘もあります。腰掛けが夥しく並べ置かれ、四つ時頃には諸人に知らせるために釣鐘を撞くのを聞き、男女老若共にその所へ集まります。その上で主人と思われる者が、羅紗の筒袖の衣類を着て一人現れ出て、農工商共に営業を怠らないよう、並びに行儀作法等のことを教導するということです。漂流人共も行きましたが、理解できませんでした。この教導する者はアメリカ並びにフランス国の者だということです。普段は別の家に住んでいて、当日にその係の場所へ出張するということです。その他に年始を祝うという儀式もありません。妻を迎える節などは魚肉、獣肉等の料理で客を呼んで賑やかな儀式もあるということを聞きましたが、漂流人共が参加することもなく、詳細については聞き及んでおりません。

一、男女共に色黒く裸で、腰の回りに木の葉を帯のように覆い、髪を切った者や髪の長い者もいます。椰子の木を多く見かけ、その椰子の実を食物とし、その木で手遊びの弓を作り、弦も木の皮で作ります。鉄輪又は鎖の壊れた物等、すべて鉄物を好み、その弓と交易して鉄物は庖丁等に直すということです。その弓で鳥などを射て食用にします。

About one chō from the coastline, there are two hall-like buildings measuring about fifteen ken by seven to eight ken in width. The interior has earthen floors paved with stones, and there are temple bells. Many benches are arranged in rows, and around four o'clock, they ring the bell to notify everyone. Men and women, old and young alike, gather at this place. Then a person who appears to be the leader emerges alone, dressed in woolen straight-sleeved garments, and provides instruction to farmers, craftsmen, and merchants about not neglecting their work and about proper conduct and etiquette. The castaways also attended, but they could not understand. This instructor is said to be from America or France. He normally resides in a separate house but comes to this designated place on the appointed day. There are no other ceremonies such as New Year celebrations. When taking a wife, they hold lively ceremonies with guests invited for meals of fish and meat, but we heard that the castaways never participated in such events, so we do not know the details.

The Condition of Kinsimer Island
The men and women are all dark-skinned and naked, covering their waists with tree leaves like a sash. Some have short hair while others have long hair. Many coconut trees are seen, and they eat the coconut fruit as food. They make toy bows from this wood and craft bowstrings from tree bark. They favor all iron objects—broken iron rings, chains, and such—and trade these bows for iron goods, which they then remake into knives and other tools. They use these bows to shoot birds for food.
