現代語訳
そこに敷き、足を投げ出して腰掛けている。夜分は寝所へ横になって寝る。また井戸も掘ってあり、石で築き立て、水鉄砲のような物を井戸の内の水面まで建て置き、木の柄であおって水を汲み取る。それを鍋で沸かして桶に入れて入浴するとのことである。万次郎滞在中に出火があったが、ごく小さな火で、消防方法の様子はオアホ（大島）での出火の時の通りであったとのことである。
一、城郭のような所は見かけなかったとのことである。
一、土地の様子は、山もあるが平地が多い。松の木などが見え、山際までは凡そ三里ほども離れている。ハアヘイフン港の港口へ石火矢（大砲）二百挺ほども囲んで備え付けてある。先の十挺ほどは鉄鉛の玉で、大きさは差し渡し凡そ八寸位の大きな石火矢で、長さ二間ほどもあるとのことである。
一、草木のことは、格別大きな木はないが、日本の楠に似寄ったものはインと申す木、並びに松杉が多い。その他に高さ五、六間位の木がまわりに見え、萱もある。その外の草木は見かけなかったとのことである。
一、鳥獣のことは、鹿、牛、馬を見かけたが、日本の牛馬より少し大きく見える。鶏、豚、羊等は家毎に飼っており、水辺で豚を店にて商いしているのを見かけた。鴨は見かけず、その外見慣れない種々の鳥類も多く、鉄砲で撃つとのことである。アフリカ州の象を見せ物に持ち越して居るのを見かけたとのことである。
英語訳
[They] spread [leather] there, stretch out their legs and sit. At night they lie down to sleep in the sleeping quarters. There are also wells dug and built up with stones, with pump-like devices extending down to the water surface inside the wells, operated with wooden handles to draw up water. They heat this water in pots and bathe in tubs. During Manjiro's stay, there was a fire, but it was quite small, and the firefighting methods were the same as those used during fires on Oahu.
Regarding fortifications: No castle-like structures were observed.
Regarding the terrain: There are mountains, but mostly flat land. Pine trees and such can be seen, with the mountain foothills about three ri away. At the entrance to Honolulu harbor, about two hundred cannons are positioned defensively. The front ten or so fire iron and lead balls, with large cannons about eight sun in diameter and about two ken in length.
Regarding vegetation: There are no particularly large trees, but there are trees called "in" (similar to Japanese camphor trees), along with many pines and cedars. Other trees about five to six ken in height can be seen all around, and there is miscanthus grass as well. No other vegetation was observed.
Regarding birds and animals: Deer, cattle, and horses were observed, appearing somewhat larger than Japanese cattle and horses. Chickens, pigs, and sheep are kept by each household, and pigs were seen being sold at shops near the waterfront. No ducks were observed, but many other unfamiliar types of birds were seen, which they hunt with guns. An elephant from Africa was observed being displayed as an attraction.
