この船で用事のために往来している。非常に早く便利が良いように、船の左右に車輪を一つずつ掛け、船中で石炭を焚き、その蒸気で水車のように水を掻いて船を進める仕掛けになっている。またニューベッドフォードの港には蒸気船で、大きさ五十間、幅七八間の大船も見かけた。これは北アメリカのナンタケット島と呼ばれる離島に通っているという。ルソン島でも同様の蒸気船を見かけたと申している。北アメリカのカリフォルニア内のサンフランシスコの川で、万次郎が乗った蒸気船は海に用いる蒸気船で、長さ二十間ほどあり、非常に早いが、川に用いる蒸気船はとても速いという。サクラメントに着船した所から川上へは小型の蒸気船で往来するという。糸織のような織物も蒸気船を使って織っているのも見たが、仕掛けは詳しく分からないという。
