蔵のように作られた家に刀や鉄砲が非常に多くあり、常日頃から手入れをしている。北アメリカ三十四州の長官のことを「ニューイングランド・ステート」と呼び、名前はプレジデントという。その長官から軍用のために渡されている鉄砲だという。その鉄砲を預かっている者の名前は忘れてしまった。6月4日は日本の5月4日に相当し、その日は祝日で、ニューベッドフォードおよびニューヘイブン中で行列を作り、鉄砲を持って歩行し、太鼓、笛、銅鑼、また金銀のように色付けした金物で作った楽器など、合計6種類ほどで拍子を揃え、弾を込めない鉄砲を数千挺、その合図には同じ音で「シュー、シュー」と声を発し、大勢の見物人が出て、食べ物を家ごとに数品作って馳走することになる。鉄砲は元のとおり、それ以外に祝う儀式は見かけなかったという。
