大地震致し同日八ッ時比右穴の山上より大岩崩れ
穴の前に落一同驚候へとも穴内に罷在候故怪我無之
同六月四日比と覚朝右穴ゟ起出候処万次郎儀東之
方凡海上拾里計沖合に白帆数多掛候船を見出
し虎右衛門五右衛門三人に而小高き所に衣類を竿の
先へ懸ヶ手を広ヶ何卒乗寄候様に頻り相振き
候処追々近寄凡三里程沖へ本戦を繋き留め
伝間船二艘を出し申不見馴人乗組追々島近

色は白と黒が混じっており、たくさんいました。その時、卵を抱いて孵化させている最中で、人が近づいても逃げませんでした。この鳥を捕まえて肉を生のまま食べました。天気の良い日には磯伝いに貝類を拾い取り、それを食料にしました。この岩穴に住み始めた最初の頃は、毎日鳥類を捕まえるのは簡単でしたが、だんだん人を恐れるようになり、鳥も逃げるようになって容易に捕まえることが困難になりました。その他、渡り鳥や鷺なども来ましたが、捕獲道具もなく、いろいろと工夫をしましたが捕まえることができませんでした。正月下旬の頃には、だんだんとその鳥も卵を孵化させて立ち去ってしまったため、その後は磯の貝などを険しく荒い磯を伝って、やっと少しずつ取って食べましたが、次第に食料が乏しくなりました。そのせいでしょうか、伝蔵と十助は病気になり、立つこともままならず穴の中に寝込んで、しきりに帰国のことを思い出しては神仏に祈念していました。
同年四月下旬頃と思われますが、雨が降り続いた後、昼時頃であったでしょうか、大地震が起こり、同日八つ時頃、この穴の山上から大岩が崩れて穴の前に落ちました。一同驚きましたが、穴の中にいたので怪我はありませんでした。
同年六月四日頃と思われます。朝、この穴から出たところ、万次郎は東の方角、およそ海上十里ほど沖合いに白い帆をたくさん掛けた船を発見しました。虎右衛門、五右衛門と三人で小高い所に衣類を竿の先に掛け、手を広げて何とか近寄ってくれるようにと頻りに振りました。すると次第に近づいてきて、およそ三里ほど沖で本船を錨で留め、伝馬船二艘を出しました。見慣れない人が乗り組んで次第に島に近づいて

The birds were mixed white and black in color, and there were a great many of them. At that time, they were incubating eggs and hatching them, and did not flee even when people approached. We caught these birds and ate their meat raw. On days with good weather, we would follow along the rocky shore to gather shellfish, which we used as food. When we first began living in this rock cave, it was easy to catch birds daily, but gradually they became afraid of people and would flee, making them difficult to catch. Around June 4th of that year, I believe, when Manjirō emerged from the cave in the morning, he spotted a ship with many white sails about ten ri offshore to the east. The three of them—Toraemon, Goemon, and Manjirō—went to higher ground, hung clothing on the end of poles, spread their arms wide, and frantically waved, hoping the ship would approach. Gradually it came closer, anchoring the main vessel about three ri offshore and launching two small boats. Unfamiliar people were aboard, gradually approaching the island.
