させた一本二朱銀二十一枚を取り出して見せたその時に、日本人ということが分かったようで、この後日本人が漂流した節のために、大坂の者たちが書き置いたものも見ましたが、いずれも無筆のため、どのようなことを記してあるのか分からなかったということです。

一、千八百四十六年（日本の弘化三年に相当します）万次郎が捕鯨船に乗り組んでいる留守中、翌年アメリカ州の内のメキシコとユナイテッドステート両国に戦争がありました。ユナイテッドステート国の内のニューヨークの武官の頭役の名はフライジランと申し、相手のメキシコの頭役の名は聞いていません。そのメキシコが負けになったのを万次郎が聞いたということです。

一、カリフォルニアから蒸気船で中国へ参る際、多人数が乗り組み、手回りなども多く、蒸気船に用いる石炭を多分に積み込むことができません。中国までは日本の里数で千四、五百里もあるところ、石炭を焚き切った際にカリフォルニアまで取りに参ることは遠海で不便なため、日本の薩州辺りに予め石炭を持ち越して囲い置く場所を望んでいるということです。アメリカ語での評判記にあったのを、去年オアホに着船した船で、同所にて万次郎が一覧したということです。

When they brought out twenty-one pieces of nishu silver coins to show, it was then that they understood these were Japanese people. Since China is about 1,400-1,500 ri away by Japanese measure, when the coal runs out, returning to California for more is inconvenient due to the distant ocean. Therefore, they desire a location around Satsuma Province in Japan where coal could be transported in advance and stored. This was written in American publications, which Manjirō examined last year on a ship that arrived in Oahu.
