In the 7th year, since among the foreign countries' tribute missions Japan alone had not yet arrived, Xuanzong commanded Palace Eunuch Chai Shan to carry an edict to the country, ordering the king to send people to Japan to instruct them to come to court the following year. Xuanzong commanded the Ministry of Works at the traveling capital to provide one sea-going vessel to the Chūzan tribute envoy Man Tailai Jiezhi, because the tribute envoy said their vessel had been damaged on the journey. This year, the king sent envoys for tribute approximately four times, with banquets and rewards as usual. In the 8th year, the king sent envoys for tribute approximately twice, with banquets and rewards as usual. In the 9th year, the king sent envoys to tribute horses and regional products. Subsequently he again sent envoys to thank [the emperor] for bestowing clothing and sea-going vessels. Xuanzong bestowed currency with distinctions of rank, and additionally commanded [the envoys] to carry back edicts and currency to bestow upon the king. In the 10th year, the king sent envoys to express gratitude. Minister of Rites Hu Ying memorialized to deliberate on sending principal and vice envoys with attendants of ten to twenty people to the capital, while all the rest would remain there and follow the regulations for provisions. In Zhengtong 1, Yingzong promulgated and bestowed the Datong Calendar. It happened that the king sent the tribute envoy Wu Shijian who arrived, so [the emperor] ordered Shijian to carry back an edict instructing both the [Ryukyu] king and Japan's King Minamoto Yoshimi. [The king] again sent envoys to tribute horses and regional products. When the envoys reached Fujian, they stopped as usual and presented tribute goods for reporting. They failed to properly declare the 90 conch shells and 58,000 sea cucumbers they carried personally, so the officials confiscated them as unreported goods. When the envoys appealed and requested compensation, Yingzong commanded the Ministry of Rites at the traveling capital to provide it as usual. Later, when Wang Cong of the Zhejiang Maritime Trade Supervisorate again raised this matter, Yingzong said to the Ministry of Rites: "Sea cucumbers and conch shells are what distant peoples use as resources for trade - what use is it to confiscate them?" He commanded that all be returned and established this as a regulation. In the 2nd year, the king sent court minister Yi Lu Jiezhi and others to tribute horses and regional products, memorializing: "The caps and robes of all officials in our country were all bestowed at the founding of the dynasty, and having become old and worn over the years, we request that new ones be bestowed. We also state that our country follows the orthodox calendar, but the sea routes are treacherous and receiving the calendar is..."
