Shō Shin was the heir of Shō En, born in the first year of Chenghua, yiyou (1465). He succeeded to the throne at age thirteen. In the fourteenth year of Chenghua (1478), he sent Chancellor Liang Ying and others to request investiture. Emperor Xianzong appointed Dong Min, Administrative Vice Commissioner of the Ministry of War, as chief envoy, and Zhang Xiang, Vice Director of the Court of State Ceremonial, as deputy envoy to carry the imperial edict to the kingdom and invest Crown Prince Shō Shin as King of Chūzan, bestowing upon him a leather crown, court robes, a gold-inlaid rhinoceros horn belt, and colored silk to the king and queen. Ying and others submitted a detailed memorial still requesting annual tribute, but this was not permitted.
In the fifteenth year (1479), the king sent envoy Li Rong to pay tribute and receive the investiture ceremony, and was granted a banquet and clothing and silk. In the sixteenth year (1480), the king sent envoy Ma Yishi to express gratitude and submitted an additional memorial requesting restoration of the old system, but this was not permitted.
In the eighteenth year (1482), the king sent envoys to tribute horses and local products, requesting that five sons of court ministers including Cai Bin be admitted to study at the Imperial Academy in Nanjing, with officials providing annual clothing and food allowances according to the old system. The king also requested irregular tribute missions, but the Ministry of Rites said, "Their intention is actually to use tribute as a pretext to seek commercial profits, and this should not be allowed." The Ministry of Rites also stated: "According to old precedent for Ryukyu tribute missions, those arriving in the capital numbered at least forty to fifty, or as many as sixty to seventy, all receiving rewards with distinctions. Recently, tribute from various countries has generally involved much corruption, so each country is permitted only five to seven people, not exceeding fifteen, to reach the capital, with the rest kept at the border to wait. Now Fujian, following precedent, allows only Senior Counselor Liang Ying and fourteen others to proceed to the capital. Having already given rewards, the remaining sixty to seventy people are all staying at the Provincial Administration Commission. The imperial treasury should be opened to provide equal compensation in order, so as not to reduce too severely and lose the intention of treating distant peoples gently." This was approved.
In the twentieth year (1484), the king sent envoy Cheng Peng to tribute horses and local products, memorializing: "The ships granted during the Yongle era have been completely destroyed, with only three remaining. We request to provide our own materials for repair and construction in Fujian." The ministry...
