和志町、端山、川寒、水川、金城、大中、桃原、當藏、鳥小堀、赤田、崎山、儀保、赤平、汀志良次、久塲川の十五村とする。戸数は四千九百五十余で、人口は二万四千四百余がある。地勢は山谷に拠り、高低が一様ではない。人家はおおむね山腹に鱗のように並び、石垣で囲まれている。道路は四方に通じ、那覇に次いで繁華な土地である。
城は山を削ってこれを築き、牡蠣石を積み重ねて外郭としている。周囲九町。正殿は中央の高所にある。殿閣は二層で、南北八楹。十一門がある。その位置は西に向かっている。城内に清泉があり、瑞泉という。現在は熊本鎮台沖縄分遣隊の営所である。
町端（マチバタ）村に市場があり、商業がやや盛んである。
市場の東に池がある。龍潭（リュウタン）といい、周回およそ三町。弁財天池（ベザイテンチ）と相連なっている。潭の両側には首里役所、警察署、中学校、中城邸等がある。池畔には古松や雑樹が鬱蒼と茂っている。池水に倒影している。もっとも賞月の景勝地である。

The fifteen villages are: Mawashi-machi, Hatayama, Kawasamu, Mizukawa, Kinjo, Onaka, Momohara, Tōgura, Torigobori, Akada, Sakiyama, Gibo, Akahira, Teishirajitsugi, and Kyuba-gawa. There are over 4,950 households with a population of over 24,400. The topography is based on mountains and valleys, with uneven elevation. The houses generally line the mountainsides like scales, surrounded by stone walls. Roads extend in all four directions, making it a prosperous area second only to Naha.
The castle was built by cutting into the mountain, with oyster stone stacked to form the outer walls. The perimeter is nine chō. The main hall is located on high ground in the center. The palace building has two stories, eight bays from north to south, and eleven gates. Its position faces west. There is a clear spring within the castle called Zuisen. Currently it serves as the garrison of the Okinawa Detachment of the Kumamoto Garrison.
There is a market in Machibata village, where commerce is fairly prosperous.
To the east of the market there is a pond called Ryūtan, with a circumference of about three chō. It is connected to Benzaiten Pond. Along both sides of the pond are the Shuri government office, police station, middle school, Nakagusuku residence, and others. Ancient pines and various trees grow luxuriantly around the pond's edge, their reflections inverted in the pond water. It is especially a scenic spot for moon viewing.
