慶良間島は別名を馬歯山という。那覇の西七里より始まる群島で、渡嘉敷・座間味・阿嘉・屋嘉比・慶伴・安室・儀志布・外地・慶留間などの諸島がある。これを前後の両部に分け、渡嘉敷・座間味の二間切とする。戸数は三百九十余りで、人口は千六百七十余りある。
渡嘉敷島が最も大きく、周囲はおよそ三里。その他は大きいもので一里余り、小さいものは数町に過ぎない。各島至る所に山林があり、樹木が鬱蒼と茂っている。地味は痩せて石が多く、耕作には適さない。
座間味島に阿護の浦がある。天然の良港で、大船数隻を停泊させることができる。そのため暴風が起これば、那覇港の船舶は皆この浦に避難する。
