八重山島役所は、石垣島大浜間切登野城村にある。また診察所の設けがある。戸数二千二百三十余で、人口一万千九百八十余がある。那覇を距ること約一百五十七里である。
石垣島は諸島中最も大きく、周囲約十六里十七町ある。中央に於茂登岳がそびえ立つ。山中には良材が多い。その山脈が垂れて北に渡り、平久保岬に至って尽きる。
川平港は西北岸にある。大船を泊めることができる。その他港湾は甚だ多いけれども、皆船を係留するのに便利ではない。
蒸気船は大浜間切と竹富島の間に碇泊する。
竹富・黒島・新城・小浜等の諸島は、石垣島の西南に散らばっている。大きなものは周囲三里余り。小さなものは一里に過ぎない。
西表島は石垣島より西に距ること、約四里十八町。周囲約十五里。中央に古見岳がそびえ立ち、樹木が鬱蒼としている。東岸に古見港がある。北岸に髭川村港がある。皆小舟を係留することができる。南方に波照間島がある。周囲三里余りである。

The Yaeyama Island government office is located in Tonoshiro Village, Ōhama Magiri, Ishigaki Island. There is also a medical clinic established there. There are over 2,230 households with a population of over 11,980. It is about 157 ri from Naha.
Ishigaki Island is the largest among the islands, with a circumference of about 16 ri and 17 chō. Mount Omoto towers in the center. There is much good timber in the mountains. Its ridges extend northward and end at Hirakubo Cape.
Kabira Port is on the northwest coast. Large ships can anchor there. Although there are many other harbors and bays, they are all inconvenient for mooring ships.
Steamships anchor between Ōhama Magiri and Taketomi Island.
The islands of Taketomi, Kuroshima, Aragusuku, and Kohama are scattered to the southwest of Ishigaki Island. The large ones have a circumference of over three ri. The small ones are no more than one ri.
Iriomote Island is located about four ri and eighteen chō west of Ishigaki Island. Its circumference is about fifteen ri. Mount Komi towers in the center, and the trees grow densely. There is Komi Port on the east coast. There is Higekawa Village Port on the north coast. Small boats can be moored at both. To the south is Hateruma Island. Its circumference is over three ri.
