現代語訳
大食い
いよいよ約束の通り、両国にて興行屋に［不明］折り［不明］との晴れ勝負。どちらが負けても京大坂は言うに及ばず、長崎まても知れる事。門弟一同疑いに固唾を呑み、どちら［も］も贔屓がありて［不明］ぬ者は夕所ばかり。もとねにもならぬのゆく［不明］くなり。
西と東に立ち別かれ、お定まりの盛りにして始めたところ、積もたまらず両人共に三十杯ずつ食いし［不明］らく、中入りに［不明］澄み茶漬けを五杯食う。
又ぞろぞろさらさらと食うこと十八杯なれど、一口物も残さず。ここん群類の大食い、まだ取っても食えそうなれど、総練切りの申し合いにして、両人共に負けず劣らずと引き分けなり。総数四十八杯ずつ、大極上と大食いを定めたり。

Great Eating
Finally, as promised, a grand showdown at a performance venue in Ryōgoku. Whichever side loses, this will be known not only in Kyoto and Osaka, but even as far as Nagasaki. All the disciples swallow hard with anticipation, and those with no favorites on either side are only the evening crowd. It becomes [...] that leads to nothing substantial.
Separated to west and east, they began with the customary servings. Unable to contain themselves, both men ate thirty bowls each [...], and during the intermission, they ate five bowls of clear tea-rice.
Again, eating smoothly and continuously, they consumed eighteen more bowls, not leaving even a single bite. These great eaters of extraordinary appetite still seemed capable of eating more, but by mutual agreement to call it a complete draw, both performed equally without either winning or losing. With a total of forty-eight bowls each, they established themselves as supreme master eaters.
