それより二人連れにて、万右衛門という店で饅頭も二十ばかり食い、休む所にてしたたか続け食い。戸塚泊まりの朝飯も七八杯食って、江の島の昼食を待ちかね、鰹を刺身にして挨拶もせずに二杯食い。鯖の塩焼きを三本食い、貝焼きをしてくれるの、黒鯛でもよいから潮汁にしてもらおうと、またいくらでも食うつもり。
十市平「さてさて今日はよく晴れる」と言えば、「何さ、本の日差しです。軽いものだと」と河豚満という。

その夜は雪ノ下泊まりにて、十市平「昨日前にて上がった事を引き受け、競争者とおっしゃるがいかが致した事と」尋ねれば、「私どもは食はよく食わぬが、本の細々食いにて何が好きという言いだてもない。私どもの先生は蝶々はあまり好かれぬ。天屋の蕎麦はおそらく続く者はございません。一杯が一口ずつなので、面白い事。いつぞお近付きにおいてなされ」と所を教える。
それば我が先生も蕎麦食いゆえ、はてない様でもあるものと思う。

Great Eating
From then on, the two traveled together. At a shop called Manemon, they ate about twenty steamed buns and rested while continuing to eat heartily. For breakfast at their Totsuka lodging, they ate seven or eight bowls, and unable to wait for lunch at Enoshima, they had bonito as sashimi, eating two helpings without even greeting anyone. They ate three grilled mackerel, ordered shellfish to be grilled, and thinking that even black sea bream would be fine if made into clear soup, they intended to eat as much as they wanted.
Jūichihei said, "My, my, today is quite clear," to which Fuguman replied, "It's nothing, just ordinary sunshine. Light stuff."

That night they stayed at Yukinoshita. Jūichihei asked, "Yesterday you accepted the challenge and called yourself a competitor - what brings you to this?" The man replied, "We don't eat that much, just nibbling here and there, with no particular preferences. Our teacher doesn't much care for butterflies. As for Tenya's soba noodles, probably no one can match us. Since one bowl is just one mouthful for us, it's quite amusing. Please do visit us sometime when you're nearby," and he told him the location.
Then [Jūichihei] thought that since his own teacher was also a soba eater, perhaps there might be some connection after all.
