現代語訳
大食い
さてもいよいよ大蕎麦食いの親玉が二人いることを類（たぐい）にして知り、いずれがいずれかと門弟の心がかりを知らせようと、喜惣八の方より十市平の縁を求め、二八の門弟一力右衛門が吸い物にて、互いに蕎麦の食い尽くし、負けた方がその下につくべき約束に言い込んだところ、もとよりけんちん爺といって誰も知らない者もない大食いなれば、自然にならばずに日限を定め、喜惣八方へ挨拶して返したので、いよいよ近々に勝負の日取りを定めることになった。

英語訳
Great Eating
Now, knowing that there are indeed two masters of great soba eating, and wanting to determine which is superior to resolve the disciples' concerns, Kisōhachi sought connections through Tōichihei, and with Nihachi's disciple Ichirikuemon serving as intermediary, they agreed to a soba eating contest where the loser would become subordinate to the winner. Since this involves the famous Kenchin-jiji, whom everyone knows as a great eater, they naturally couldn't settle it easily, so they set a date limit. After exchanging greetings with Kisōhachi's side, it was decided that the date for the contest would be determined very soon.
