英語訳

to raise and lower them. From the ship's crew downward, there are twenty-two people in total. Each has their specialized duties. Among them, the most agile ones are called "yabanˮ (crow squad). There are two, a chief and deputy. They climb the masts to keep watch, ascending and descending like flying birds. All soldiers practice ship operations. Each ship has one hundred men as assistants. The Number One ship is supervised by a qianzong (battalion commander), while the Number Two ship is supervised by a shouwei (garrison commander). The Number One ship is ten zhang long, two zhang and eight chi wide, and one zhang and five chi deep. [Former Ming investiture ships connected the stern and empty tip.] [Length seventeen zhang. Width three zhang, one chi and six cun. Depth one zhang, three chi and three cun. During the Jiajing era, chief envoy Chen Kan and deputy envoy Gao Cheng memorialized to establish specifications. The investiture ship of Jiajing 38th year. Following old specifications. Built with length including empty tip fifteen zhang. Width two zhang, nine chi and seven cun. Depth one zhang and four chi. The investiture ship built in Wanli 7th year. With empty tip fourteen zhang. Width two zhang and nine chi. Depth one zhang and four chi. Chongzhen 6th year. Investiture envoy Du Sance's attendant Hu Jing's record. Investiture ship length twenty zhang. Width six zhang. Our dynasty Kangxi 2nd year. Zhang Xueli's record. Shape like a shuttle. Length eighteen zhang. Width two zhang and two chi. Depth two zhang and three chi. Kangxi 22nd year. Wang Ji's record. Selected two bird-ships for use. Ship length fifteen zhang and more. One bird-ship of the Min'an Central Camp. Length twelve zhang and two chi. Width two zhang, six chi and five cun.] Four compartments fore and aft. Four water compartments. Four water chests. Twelve water barrels. Together they hold seven hundred dan of water. The rudder is two zhang, five chi and five cun long, and seven chi and nine cun wide. Western construction method. Called "jiaban rudderˮ (sandwich-board rudder). Does not use belly restraints. The rudder is made of ironwood. Called "salt rudderˮ. Soaked in seawater, it becomes increasingly hard. [Former Ming investiture ships. Standardized production of three ironwood rudders. Each gate three zhang and five chi long. With large cables to tie them. From the ship's bottom like a hood reaching to the ship's bow. This is called the belly restraint. Made with rattan. Now the two investiture ships. All take merchant ships for use. Number Two is made like bird-ship style. Uses two belly restraint strips. Number One ship uses Western sandwich-board rudder. Does not use belly restraints. Also does not install spare rudders. When about to put to sea. Argued with Fujian officials about installing spare rudders. The ship's bosun Lin [surname] said: Ship rudders with Western construction are most sturdy and stable. No need to use spares. Moreover, the rudder weighs ten thousand jin. The ship also has no place to store it. Finally did not install spare rudders. Said this differs slightly from before.]
