翻刻

重刻之舉。意在斯乎。有客謂予曰。
夫琉球既為我影國。而猶且貳於
清。奉其正朔。受其冊封。而吾之
國家不討之。何也。曰。古明王之待
夷狄。羈縻不責備也。今吾之　國
家亦然耶。則益足以見其柔懐之
德爾。客唯々而退。

現代語訳

重刻の事業を行う意図はこのようなところにある。ある客が私に言った。「そもそも琉球は既に我が国の属国でありながら、なお清国に対して二心を抱き、清国の年号を奉じ、清国からの冊封を受けている。それなのに我が国家がこれを討伐しないのは何故か。」私は答えた。「古の明君が夷狄に対する時は、羁縻政策を用い、完全な服従は要求しなかった。今我が国家もまた同様である。これによってかえってその寛大な徳を示しているのである。」客はただ「はい、はい」と言って退いた。

英語訳

The intention behind this reprinting lies in these considerations. A guest said to me: "Since Ryukyu is already our vassal state, yet still harbors dual loyalties toward the Qing, following their calendar and receiving investiture from them, why does our nation not punish them for this?" I replied: "When ancient sage kings dealt with barbarian peoples, they employed a policy of loose control without demanding perfect compliance. Our nation today follows the same principle. This actually demonstrates all the more our nation's virtue of gentle embrace." The guest simply nodded in agreement and withdrew.
