／枚田（さなだ）に。／植（うゑ）そめて。／民た（たみ）を／養（やしな）ふ／種（たな）つもの。／五穀（ごこく）の／司（つかさ）。
／飯米（まんま）／天皇（てんわう）と申／奉（たてまつ）るなし。あまねく／萬民（ばんみん）を／惠（めぐ）也。

中国では神農氏が、鍬や鋤を作って民に農業を教えた。我が朝廷では、千早振る神代の昔、久方の天の真田に植え始めて、民を養う種物である五穀の司、飯米天皇と申し上げる方がいらっしゃった。広く万民を恵み、人徳深くいらっしゃったので、天下こぞって尊敬していた。

Chapter 1
In China, the divine emperor Shennong made hoes and plows and taught agriculture to the people. In our imperial court, in the ancient age of the gods when cherry blossoms bloomed magnificently, there was a deity called Hanmai-tenno (Rice Emperor) who governed the five grains—the seed crops that nourish the people—first planted in the sacred fields of heaven. He blessed all the people widely, and because his benevolence was deep and profound, the entire realm revered him.
