現代語訳
「これが茅なら良い金（収入）であろう」
頭の毛を鎌で刈る。
「俺は米のなる木にしてほしい」
「何としてこんな小さいかみそりでは、はかどくものではない」
鎌で大体刈ってから剃刀で清剃りをして、ようやく十日ばかりで頭を半分ほど剃った。「まずまずこれで少し気が晴れた。今日からは法体の心である」として、大太法師と名前を改めたということである。

"If this were grass, it would make good money!"

After roughly cutting with a sickle, they shaved cleanly with a razor, and finally in about ten days they shaved about half of his head. "Well, this has cleared my mind a bit. From today on, I have the heart of a Buddhist monk," and so he changed his name to Daitahōshi (Great Monk).
