必要があればあなたから借りることにしよう」。そこで老友はブラジル国にいる親族に託して手紙を送り、私の管家（財産管理人）及び交易の家臣たちに届けさせた。その内容の大略は以下のとおりである。
「別れてから二十八年、あなた方は無事であろうか。私は以前航海して南アメリカ州ウルグアイ河が海に注ぐ洋中で猛風に遭い船が破損し、皆が溺死したが、私だけは泳いで一つの島に辿り着いた。その島には住民がいなかったが、それでも天の恵みにより、そこに二十八年住んでいた。偶然本国の船長に出会って帰ることができた。帰ることはできたものの、困窮が日々甚だしく、資財と生計の道具を分けて今の急場を助けてほしい」
六ヶ月を経て、返事の書状と金貨及び生計の道具が送られてきた。その文面には以下のようにあった。

交易の家臣も報告書を送った。その内容の大意は以下のとおりである。
「突然のお便りを賜り、初めは信じることができず、やがて疑い、終に喜びました。ああ、主公がご無事でいらっしゃったのは、まことに天の加護によるもので、ほとんど人力の及ぶところではありません。臣等は職務を守り、朝夕怠らず、近頃アフリカに航海し、かなりの大きな利益を得ました。これは報告せずにはいられません。その他、蔗田は日々開墾され、諸々の果樹も林となり、奴隷を養うこと既に二、三十人に至っております。謹んで計簿、田籍及び心ばかりの品を奉ります。臣等の忠誠をご覧ください」

"Twenty-eight years since we parted, are you all well? I previously sailed and reached the ocean where the Uruguay River flows into the sea off the continent of South America, where fierce winds destroyed the ship and everyone drowned, but I alone swam to an island. Though that island had no inhabitants, still, by heaven's grace, I lived there for twenty-eight years. By chance I encountered a ship captain from our home country and was able to return. Though I was able to return, my poverty grows worse daily, so I hope you will divide the assets and provide necessities to help in this urgent time."
After six months passed, a reply letter came with gold coins and necessities. The text read as follows:
"I respectfully send this letter, both surprised and delighted. Unexpectedly, the great lord still exists in this heaven and earth! This small

person has already made sacrifices and offered prayers to the great lord dozens of times. Looking back on past days, it seems like falling into a dream. After the great lord departed, we devoted ourselves solely to the family business, cultivating fields and planting sugar cane, and assets have reached three thousand moidores 《marginal note: name of currency》. Now we send several hundred gold coins, various goods, clothing and equipment, and account books. Your servant humbly reports."
The trading retainers also sent a report. The general meaning of its content was as follows:
"Having suddenly received your precious communication, at first we dared not believe it, then doubted, and finally rejoiced. Ah, that our lord is safe is truly due to heaven's protection, hardly within human power. We servants have maintained our duties, working morning and night without negligence.
