ることはできない。終日終夜雨が降り、翌日はさらに激しくなった。戸外に一歩も出ることができない。地震が再び起こることを恐れ、旧舎は岩に接して建てられているため甚だ危険である。第十九日と二十日においては、ただ広々とした場所にいて、山野を歩き回り、良い場所を探した。住み慣れた舎を捨てるのは心に欲しないが、地震を恐れて住居を移そうとしてもなかなか決断できない。これは第四月第二十一日のことである。
第二十二日、夜明け前に大斧を手にして林に入り木を伐った。この斧はインドで鍛えられたものである。刃はすでに摩耗しているが、その切れ味はまだ使用に堪える。また石を運んだ。この作業は多くの日数を費やした。その運び方は、ただ両足を使って転がし、手は使わない。
第二十八日と二十九日は斧の背で石を割った。
