たばこはこちら（日本）と同様でしょうか。何と言うのでしょうか。きせるは焼き物でしょうか、金属でしょうか。
答
こちら（日本）のものより品質が劣ります。やはり「たばこ」と言います。きせるは焼き物もあります。金属も石もあります。水晶で火打石を取り、それで吸います。私たちはもったいないので、火打石では吸いませんでした。なぜかと尋ねられたので、もったいない旨を申しましたところ、笑っていました。

武芸は稽古をしているのでしょうか。
答
そのようなものは全く見かけませんでした。足軽のような身分の人が鉄砲の稽古をしているのを見物しました。専ら足の踏み方を習っていました。弓は武士が持っているようなものは見かけませんでした。猟師が持っているのを見かけました。非常に粗末なもので、やはり蝦夷人の弓と同様でした。刃物は非常に鈍く、全く切れません。金物は荒砥で白く研いだようになっています。

I saw them on the road from Yakutsk to Irkutsk. They were generally mouse-colored, extraordinarily large, and had humps on their backs. Their heads were very elongated and small. They call them "verblud" (camels).
Question:
Is tobacco the same as here (in Japan)? What do they call it? Are pipes made of ceramic or metal?
Answer:
It is of lower quality than ours (in Japan). They still call it "tobacco." There are ceramic pipes as well. There are also metal and stone ones. They use flint made from crystal to light it and smoke with that. We found it too precious, so we did not smoke using the flint. When asked why, we explained that it seemed too precious, and they laughed.

Do they practice martial arts?
Answer:
I did not see anything of that sort at all. I observed people of ashigaru (foot soldier) status practicing with firearms. They were primarily learning how to position their feet. I did not see bows of the type that samurai carry. I saw hunters carrying them. They were very crude things, just like the bows of the Ainu people. The bladed weapons are very dull and do not cut at all. The metalwork appears to have been roughly sharpened with coarse whetstones to a white finish.

You also met with high officials (rojū) - how was the manner of people's comings and goings?
