並べて焼けば両方が開いて平らになります。

タール（チャン）の製法を見たことがありますか。
答
十分に見物いたしました。地面を掘って甕を埋め、厚板で蓋をして多くの穴を開け、その上に土をかけます。松や杉の類で、総じて脂の多い木を積んで火をかけます。火が回った頃合いに、上から生草を覆いかぶせて蒸し焼きにすると、下の甕へ自然に溜まります。タール一斗が出ると、上に水二升ほどを湛えるものでございます。

Have you seen the method of producing tar (chan)?
Answer
I observed it thoroughly. They dig into the ground and bury earthenware jars, cover them with thick boards with many holes drilled in them, and cover that with soil. They pile up pine, cedar, and other resinous woods and set them on fire. When the fire spreads around, they cover it with fresh grass from above and steam-roast it, causing the tar to naturally accumulate in the jars below. When one to (about 18 liters) of tar is produced, about two sho (about 3.6 liters) of water floats on top.

Have you seen how woolen cloth (rasha) is woven?
Answer
I also observed this. When spinning sheep's wool and weaving it on a loom, they spray water on it and rub the coarse parts of the wool with brushes to felt it together.

In Russia, the days must be extremely short around the winter solstice. How did you find it?
Answer
I don't recall them being particularly short. However, from May to August or September...
