組幸太夫か掛たることき物を銀にて作りたるをかけ笠を取て脇はさみ
絨哆呢（ラシヤ）の外套（ウハキ）に銀の釦紐（ホタン）を付／緊身（ハタギ）は猩々緋に黒き縁（ヘリ）をかけたる
を着し黄黒間道の天鵞絨の袴を着白めりやすの上に深沓をさす
是は幸太夫か沓とは少しく違ひて半より上は柿（カキ）色の革にて継たれと
製作は同様也諸共に笠を地に置許【注②】をなして床几に座したる躰更に
此国の人とは見へす紅毛人の形に髣髴（ホウホツタリ）たり夫より彼二人に問を下ふ
答ふる所的実にして聊も虚誕（キヨタン）なし誠に千古の一大奇事也

平岡美濃守、高井主膳正が列座し、その前に出張所を構え、御小納戸頭取の亀井駿河守、小野河内守、多紀永寿院、桂川甫周が列座した。これらの者には事の詳細を尋問するようにとの命が下された。次に御目付の中川勘三郎、矢部彦五郎がおり、この両人は今日の執事である。御座の御後方には御小性が控え、御左には御小納戸が群居している。御白砂に床几二脚を置いた。これは彼ら二人の者のために設けたものである。さて、午の刻の初め頃、ようやく幸太夫と磯吉を召し出された。幸太夫は年齢四十二歳で、髷を三つに組んで後ろに垂らし、黒い絹で巻き、フェルト帽を脇に挟み、襟には黄金で作った小さな鏡のような物を掛け、桃色の銀モールで作った釦と紐を施し、同じ織物の袴を着用していた。

紺地の錦の下着を着て、足は白いメリヤスの上に黒いペルシャ革の深い靴を履き、マルト材の杖を突いていた。磯吉は年齢二十八歳で、同じように髷を組み、幸太夫が掛けているような物を銀で作ったものを掛け、笠を取って脇に挟み、ラシャの外套に銀の釦を付け、下着は猩々緋に黒い縁を掛けたものを着し、黄黒の間道の天鵞絨の袴を着て、白いメリヤスの上に深靴を履いている。これは幸太夫の靴とは少し違って、くるぶしより上は柿色の革で継がれているが、作りは同様である。二人とも笠を地に置いて拝礼をなして床几に座した姿は、もはやこの国の人とは見えず、紅毛人の形に似ていた。それから彼ら二人に問いを下す。答える所は的確で真実であり、少しも嘘偽りがない。誠に千古の一大奇事である。

Hiraoka Mino-no-kami and Takai Shuzen-no-shō were seated in attendance, with a temporary station set up in front of them. The chief pages Kamei Suruga-no-kami, Ono Kawachi-no-kami, Taki Eijuin, and Katsuragawa Hoshū were seated in attendance. These men were commanded to conduct detailed questioning about the matter. Next were the inspectors Nakagawa Kanzaburō and Yabe Hikogorō, who served as today's administrators. Behind the [Shogun's] seat, young attendants were stationed, and to the left, pages were gathered. Two folding chairs were placed on the white sand. These were prepared for those two men. Then, around the beginning of the noon hour, Kōtayū and Isokichi were finally summoned. Kōtayū was forty-two years old, with his topknot braided in three parts and hanging down his back, wrapped in black silk. He held a felt hat under his arm, wore a small mirror-like golden ornament at his collar, and had peach-colored silver moiré fabric with buttons and cords, wearing hakama of the same fabric.

He wore navy brocade undergarments, and on his feet, white merino stockings under black Persian leather deep shoes, carrying a walking stick made of malt wood. Isokichi was twenty-eight years old, with his topknot arranged similarly, wearing a silver version of the ornament that Kōtayū wore. He held his hat under his arm, wore a woolen overcoat with silver buttons, undergarments of bright red with black trim, yellow and black striped velvet hakama, and deep shoes over white merino stockings. These differed slightly from Kōtayū's shoes in that the part above the ankle was made of persimmon-colored leather, though the construction was similar. Both men placed their hats on the ground, made their obeisance, and sat on the folding chairs. Their appearance no longer resembled people of this country, but was similar in form to red-haired foreigners. Questions were then put to these two men. Their answers were accurate and truthful, without the slightest falsehood. This was truly a great wonder of a thousand ages.
