よみ方の心得
一題をとりたらはえんの字えんの言葉を先へ求むべし
たとへは火鉢といふ題ならは◦すみ◦はい◦つける◦かきおこす
◦しかみ◦はんど◦手をあぶるなどいふことばをいろ〳〵
考
出して何れにても趣向のよりたるを読なりゆめ〳〵
火はちの外を考えべからすかならずあたらしき趣向
を読とて深く案じ入てまゝ傍題になる也秀句いひ
かけも自然に求べししゐてもとむれば歌のさまあしく
意趣たちかぬるものなりよく〳〵心得べきなり

一狂歌に法なしといへとも歌にすかりてよみ歌の
式によるべしただの言葉を三十ひと文字

歌も心より入たるがよきといへと狂歌はめつらしき
狂言をもとめ言葉より入たるがはじめは入安き
ものなり心の狂はおほくよみいづる中におのづ
からうるものなればおもしろき狂言を求て

火鉢の外を考えるべからず 必ず新しき趣向
を読むとて深く案じ入ってそのまま傍題になる也 秀句言い
かけも自然に求むべし 強いて求むれば歌の様悪しく
意趣立ちかねるものなり よくよく心得べきなり

狂言を求め言葉より入りたるが始めは入り易き
ものなり 心の狂は多く読み出づる中におのづ
から得るものなれば面白き狂言を求めて

Guidelines for Composing
1. When taking a topic, one should first seek related characters and related words.
For example, if the topic is "hibachi" (brazier), one should consider various words such as: ◦charcoal ◦ash ◦light ◦stir up
◦fire tongs ◦half-cylinder ◦warm hands, etc., and
think of
these, then compose using whichever concept appeals most. Never
consider anything outside of the hibachi topic. Even when necessarily seeking new concepts,
if one thinks too deeply, it becomes a side topic. Excellent phrases and
wordplay should be sought naturally. If forced, the poem's form becomes poor and
the meaning fails to stand. This should be well understood.

1. Although kyōka has no strict rules, one should follow the
form of waka poetry. It is merely arranging ordinary words into thirty-one syllables.
However, one should borrow ancient poetic language
and insert new comic elements. Though kyōka
is best when it comes from the heart, for kyōka seeking unusual
comic elements and starting from wordplay is easier
for beginners. The madness of the heart is something naturally
