現代語訳
燕の大臣は日夜の贅沢で身代をすっかり貧乏になってしまったので、両親は大いに怒りをなし、感動して朝廷へ四角な字で訴え出た。しばらく燕趙（えんちょう）の気に入らない親分の家を主人として仕えていたが、ここにも長くはいられず、仕方なく帽子一枚をかぶり、名主のつよい筏に乗って海上に浮かんだ。
日頃日本のことを慕って、すべて日本風であったので、すぐに筑摩が沖へ心を向けて漂っていたところ、例の住吉大明神は白楽天が来た時さえ必ず追い返した神であるから、稲荷町の外国人には必ずきっぱりと立ち向かうのも畏れ多いくらいである。しかれどもこの外国人、間違いだらけであっても仮に日本の風習を慕うと聞けば、全く見ぬふりもできないだろうと、和歌の神の柔らかな心でご意見があった。

The minister of Yan had become completely impoverished from his day-and-night extravagance, so his parents became very angry and, moved to action, petitioned the court in square characters. For a while he served as a retainer in the house of a boss from Yan-Zhao who was not pleased with him, but he could not stay there long either. With no other choice, wearing only a single hat, he boarded a village headman's strong raft and floated out to sea.
Since he had always yearned for Japan and everything about him was in the Japanese style, he immediately set his heart toward Chikuma's offshore waters and drifted there. The famous Sumiyoshi Daimyojin is a deity who firmly rejected even Bai Juyi when he came, so it would be presumptuous for him to definitively confront a foreigner from Inari-machi. However, regarding this foreigner, even though he may be full of mistakes, if it is heard that he temporarily yearns for Japanese customs, one could hardly pretend not to notice completely, so the gentle heart of the poetry deity offered this opinion.
