現代語訳
とかく唐人は夜が明けたら詩を作ろうと、手習いばかり作って、詩人はいないから名所も知らず、何の役にも立たないもの。また聯句の五十韻や百韻を詠んだところで、李白の古詩のような、あるいは賈島の元微のような天才詩人はなく、太鼓持ち同然である。
唐詩選さえ絶句ばかり覚えて、石摺りの摺り物ばかりして面白くないと、すっと気を変えて、大和歌を詠んでみようとその頃和学者と呼ばれた柿本の季相正という歌詠みの弟子となる。
酔月句じゃ苦労して、堅気歌の会などをする。

季相正の縁によって植えられた竹は、人麻呂の筆の軸である。
真意の長刃、折り竹一心、雄半。
今日が月次の会と見えて、今日という札などはきっちりと二本立っている。
門は黒木の鳥居を写し、垣根は宮城野の萩垣。

In any case, when the Chinese person thinks of composing poetry when dawn breaks, he only practices writing exercises, but since there are no real poets, he knows no famous places and is of no use whatsoever. Even if he composes fifty or hundred-verse linked poems, there are no genius poets like Li Bai's ancient poems or Jia Dao's Yuan Wei, and he is merely like a flatterer.
He only memorizes quatrains from the Tang Poetry Selection and does nothing but stone rubbing prints, finding it uninteresting. Suddenly changing his mind, he decides to try composing Japanese waka poetry and becomes a disciple of a poet named Kakinomoto no Kisōshō, who was called a Japanese scholar at that time.
He struggles with drunken moon verses and holds gatherings for serious waka poetry.
