賤か貴に異なる事誰かはここれをしらさるへき 正則か侍
の首参らする所に 給ふ所の首はこと〳〵く足軽の
兵とこそ見えつれ其品もつともひとしからすそも〳〵
正則身不肖には侍れとも徳川殿の御方として御先を
かけ随分の微功をあらはせし事まつこた正則一身
の功にあらすこれしかしなから家の子郎等か 命をすて
身をかへり身さるによりし所也それに今正則か侍
をもつて御手に属せし足軽に 准せらるゝ所正則天に
おゐて 面目をうしなひ訖ぬ又正則か参らせし
所侍の首たゝ一つ報ひ給らん所の首多き事を望む
にあらすこれらの首給らん事其詮なしすみやかに
返し参らするとそ申ける 井伊本多これを聞て
大に驚き 正則か宣ふ 所理至極しぬさらは伊奈

《注：伊奈は徳川家の先手の足軽大将である》正則はいよいよ怒りに堪えず、首をことごとく打ち返して言った。「およそ天下の人には貴賎の別がある。貴人が賤人と同じ扱いを受けることはなく、賤人が貴人と異なる扱いを受けることは誰もが知っているはずだ。正則の侍の首を参らせたところ、いただいた首はことごとく足軽の兵と見える。その身分も全く釣り合わない。そもそも正則は身は不肖ではあるが、徳川殿の味方として先陣を駆け、相応の功績を表したことは間違いない。正則一人の功績ではなく、これはひとえに家の子郎党が命を捨て、身を顧みなかったからである。それなのに今、正則の侍を徳川家に属する足軽と同等に扱われることは、正則が天に対して面目を失うことになった。また正則が参らせた侍の首はただ一つである。報いとしていただく首が多いことを望むのではない。これらの首をいただいても意味がないので、速やかに返上する」と申した。井伊と本多はこれを聞いて大いに驚き、「正則の仰ることは理に適っている。それならば伊奈の手に属する騎馬の侍の首を切って参らせよう。伊奈と仲直りしていただくことは公私にとって大きな幸いであり、何事もこれに勝るものはない」と言った。しかし正則は家の子郎党に疎まれて、重ねて本格的な軍事行動を起こすことは望ましくなく、今は徳川殿にも
