severe. Although various doctors exhausted their medical arts, there was no effect, and he returned to his home province. In the first month of the third year, he made the journey to the capital despite his illness. In the eleventh month of this year, Taikō entered Ujisato's residence and there was a banquet. Ujisato's illness grew worse day by day and month by month, and at the age of forty, he died on the morning of the 7th day of the 2nd month of Bunroku 4 (1595).
"Though there are limits, the rootless flowers scatter, yet the spring mountain wind is so impatient of heart"
He had written this poem as if it were merely casual brush play. This was because after the Kunohe campaign in Tenshō 19, when Ishida Jibu-shōyū Mitsunari returned to the capital, he reported: "Observing how Ujisato conducted military affairs this time, there is no one like him. His troops marched continuously for seven days without pause, and not a single person violated military law. If this person harbors no second thoughts against the realm, such a fortress would be unparalleled in the world. He is someone who should be well understood and carefully watched." Because of this report, poison was secretly administered to him, and unexpectedly afflicted by illness, he came to a futile end - this is what people continued to believe, so it is said. On the same 7th day, Taikō sent Asano Danjō-shōhitsu Nagamasa as an envoy to his son Tsuruchiyomaru, declaring that there should be no changes to his father's territories. Nagamasa carried the official document and went down to Ōshū to administer provincial affairs. In this year, Tsuruchiyomaru came of age and took the name Tōzaburō Hidetaka (later changed to Hideyuki). Taikō arranged the marriage and granted him a daughter of Tokugawa-dono. In that year, when the matter of Kampaku Hidetsugu occurred and Osaka Castle was built, Hideyuki was appointed Hida-no-kami, and in Keichō 1 (1596) became a chamberlain with the court rank of Ju-shi'i-ge (Junior Fourth Rank Lower Grade). In the same third year of
