にならぬ物なり。大きなるは賭博
箱にて九寸一徳とて九
の寸有り。小さき物は賽なり【賽なり】。
賽を好く人はいつも終いは
真っ裸なり。たとえこれまで
好きなりとも、ふっつりと流
儀を改めて吉原
を改めるを「改流」
とは言うなり。また大重の開平とて
贈り物をやる倹約の仕方とは、
重箱を大きくして上下底に
こしらえさせ、それへ物を入れて呉
れるべし。気を張ったように見えて
物入り少なし。先の旦那は
重の蓋を開けて見て「これたく
さんに呉れた」と思うなり。旦那さえ
そう思えば、先の家来の
悪く言う程度は捨てて置くべし。
これも重箱を大きくして流儀を改め
る故に「大重の改流」と言うなり。また両大重の
開立と言うは料理向きの倹約なり。

『About Kuramae and
Market Price Calculations』
Kuramae and Odawara-chō
are both districts where sophisticated people
live. However, not all ten
out of ten people are truly sophisticated.
There are three levels: sophisticated, half-sophisticated,
and unsophisticated.
Half-sophisticated people speak about
market prices, while unsophisticated people
like to talk about splitting costs.
This is what we call "Kuramae
market price splitting."
You should associate with people
according to their respective levels.

Things of such shape bring no benefit
to one's fortune. The large ones are gambling
boxes called "9-sun 1-toku" with
nine sun measurements. The small ones are dice【dice indeed】.
People who love dice always end up
stark naked. Even if you've been
fond of this until now, completely change your ways
and reform your approach to Yoshiwara—
this is called "reformed style."
Also, there's the "opening square of large jūbako"—
a method of economy when giving gifts:
Have large jūbako boxes made with
tops and bottoms, and put things in them to give.
It looks generous while actually
requiring little expense. The recipient
opens the jūbako lid and thinks
"They gave me so much!"
As long as the master thinks so,
you should ignore any criticism from
his servants. This is also called "reformed style of large jūbako"
because you reform your ways by using large jūbako boxes.
Also, "opening cube of double jūbako"
refers to economy in cooking.
